Masala Borugulu / Spiced Puffed Rice

Masala Borugulu / Spiced Puffed Rice is an addictive spicy-crispy snack, which is made in a jiffy. This snack is famous all over India and called by different names, Murmure, Muri, Mandakki Oggarane, Murra, Mamra and Pori. As the Monsoon has started all over, I prepared this for the evening snack. Bangalore having the cool and pleasant weather, enjoying the Masala Borugulu with a cup of chai / Coffee brings nostalgic memories.

Ingredients:

1. Puffed Rice / Murmure - 4 cups

2. Pepper Powder - 1/2 tsp.
3. Sambar Powder / Chilly powder - 1/2 tsp.
4. Turmeric - 1/4th tsp.
5. Groundnuts - 1/2 cup
6. Garlic - 5 pods ( with outer cover)
7. Curry leaves - 3 springs
8. Salt - as needed
9. Oil - 2 tsp.

Cooking Method:

1. Crush the garlic pods roughly keeping it aside. Combine salt, pepper powder, sambar/chilly powder and turmeric in a bowl.

2. Heat the oil in a wide pan and add groundnuts. Roast them for around 3 minutes under low to medium flame.

3. Add curry leaves and crushed garlic and immediately switch off the flame. Take the pan out of the heat.

4. Now add the combined dry powder kept in the bowl and mix it gently. And immediately add the puffed rice too to it and give it a gentle stir. The heat of the oil is enough to coat the puffed rice with the spice. Serve immediately with a cup of coffee and tea and enjoy the monsoons.
